Super GT

For Auto Salon Magazine Issue 55, I photographed TRD’s Super GT Supra. This was quite an interesting car and shoot. Usually for even the most modified of cars, we can use go-jacks that fit under each wheel and allow the car to be moved in the studio easily, without marking the pristine white floor. This car’s bodykit and massive slicks meant that the go-jacks were useless. The width of the rubber and super low aero package meant there was no possible way to fit them under the car. Being a proper race car, the Supra has a steering rack which is designed to work well at 200km/h+, meaning one turn of the steering wheel, moves the front wheels what seems like 5 degrees. So to position the car in the studio required a 25 point turn.

The studio we used was Mammoth, located in Sydney’s western suburbs. It’s the biggest cyclorama in Australia and is easy to use. I shot the car using two lighting styles, an even and diffuse light which clearly showed each and ever detail of the car. As the title of the story was “Anatomy of a Super GT car”, the shoot was to be almost like a blueprint diagram.

The second style was a more dramatic directly lit lighting setup, which made the car stand out even more. As it was a white car in a white studio, the second method worked better with the background turning to a neutral gray, giving the car more depth.
